Old Mission Peninsula: Michigan’s Premier Wine Destination

The Old Mission Peninsula is more than just a scenic escape—it’s a world-class wine region shaped by geography, climate, and passion. Located along the 45th parallel—just like the famed wine-growing regions of southern France and northern Italy—this narrow strip of land is located halfway between the North Pole and the Equator, creating ideal conditions for growing high-quality grapes.

The Traverse City area is celebrated for its cool-climate wines, where a blend of mild temperatures, rolling hills, and well-drained soils make it the perfect spot for producing wine. The moderating effects of nearby Lake Michigan help protect the vines from harsh frosts in spring and fall and extend the growing season.

Wineries here specialize in crisp whites like Riesling, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, and elegant reds such as Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc.

Exploring the Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail

The Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail stretches across the full 17-mile length of the peninsula, beginning with Black Star Farms near the base and winding north to 2 Lads Winery, high on a hill towards the tip of the peninsula.

This scenic drive offers more than just great wine—it’s a journey through rolling vineyards, cherry orchards, farm stands, and beautiful views of Grand Traverse Bay. It ends at the Mission Point Lighthouse, which marks the peninsula’s northernmost point.

There are two main roads that you can take. Center Road (M-37) runs straight up the spine of the peninsula and offers the most direct access to many of the wineries. Peninsula Drive follows the western shoreline with winding curves and waterfront scenery.

Most tasting rooms are easiest to reach from Center Road. (Hawthorne Vineyards is the exception.) But if you’ve got the time, I’d suggest you drive up Center Road and return down Peninsula Drive. It’s worth it for the change of scenery!

Wineries on the Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail

There are elven wineries on Old Mission Peninsula. Each location offers something a little different—whether it’s sparkling wines, bold reds, or scenic patios perfect for soaking in the views. Whether you’re a seasoned wine lover or a casual taster, the trail has something for everyone.

Black Star Farms on Old Mission Peninsula: Refined Wines and Farmhouse Charm

Wine Barrel display at the entrance to Black Star Farms winery on the Old Mission Peninsula

Just minutes out from downtown Traverse City, Black Star Farms is a great first stop on your wine‑trail journey. While this winery may be best known for its Suttons Bay estate, their Old Mission location delivers the same exceptional quality and welcoming atmosphere.

In fact, this is one of the wineries I feel perfectly comfortable visiting solo. The inviting tasting room features a round bar constructed from wine barrels. I’ve often pulled up a stool and enjoyed a glass of wine and conversation with the bartender and fellow wine enthusiasts.

With more than 40 award‑winning wines, brandies, and ciders to choose from, you’re guaranteed to find something you like. You can’t go wrong ordering a flight from the Black Star Farms Arcturos label – it’s the winery’s premium wine series crafted from grapes grown exclusively in their own vineyards and named after Arcturus, the star.

The Arcturos line includes a variety of white and red wines, from their award-winning dry Riesling to their Vintners Pinot Noir and a bubbly Rosé. Top it off with a taste of Sirius Cherry Dessert Wine!

Enjoy wine flights, spirit samplers, cocktails, and wine by the glass.

Mari Vineyards: Italian Elegance

The patio at Mari Vineyards on Old Mission Peninsula in Travese City

Mari Vineyards stands out not just for its exceptional wines but also for its striking Tuscan-inspired architecture. Modeled after traditional Italian wineries, the estate has the feel of Tuscany right in the heart of Northern Michigan. But it’s not just about looks — Mari specializes in Italian varietals and elegant red blends, along with northern Michigan classics – Riesling, Gamay Noir, and Cabernet Franc.

Mari has made a commitment to estate-grown grapes and European-style winemaking. Most of their grapes grow outdoors, but to accommodate more challenging varieties, Mari uses hoop houses that help extend the growing season and ripen grapes that typically wouldn’t thrive this far north.

Discover hard-to find Italian wine varieties like Sangiovese, Teroldego and Nebbiolo.

What truly sets Mari apart is their network of underground wine caves. Carved 30 feet down into the earth, the caves stay at a natural, cellar-perfect temperature year-round. One of the tunnels is perfectly aligned with the summer solstice sunrise! Wine club members are invited to attend this special event.

Mari offers daily drop-in tours for $20, where guests can explore the caves and learn about the wine aging process. It’s also possible to reserve a private tour and tasting to learn about Mari’s tasting room, production facility, and wine caves.

Drop into the Tuscan-inspired tasting room to enjoy small plates that rotate with the season, wine flights and wine by the glass. Sit out on the patio in the warmer season and take in sweeping views of East Grand Traverse Bay. Mari’s has live music every Tuesday and Thursday.

Hawthorne Vineyards: A Hidden Gem Worth the Detour!

Hawthorne Vineyards is truly one of the peninsula’s hidden gems. Accessed from Peninsula Drive, the entrance road winds its way through rows of vines, giving the winery a more secluded feel than some of the larger wineries. The tasting room is located on a bluff with sweeping views of both East and West Grand Traverse Bays.

The road winding up to Hawthorne Vineyards along the Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail.

Wine lovers can take in the view from the outdoor patio during the summer months and can gather around the outdoor fireplace when the weather is cooler.

The talented staff at Hawthorne has created flights of three wines each that complement each other for guests to enjoy. Choose from a dry white or a dry red flight. You can mix it up by ordering the sweet flight: 2 whites plus a glass of “Sweet Lucy,” which our server described as a red wine named after Lucy, vineyard’s current dog. Or up your game and go for the Premium flight made up of a glass of sparkling wine, the Merlot/cab blend, and a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon.

On the day of our visit, the small plate menu included a charcuterie board and dips like smoked salmon, smoked gouda with jalapeno, and goat cheese with apricot. Hawthorne also offers a popcorn a glass of popcorn: cheddar or buttery. Which led me to ask an essential question: Why don’t all of the wineries have popcorn?

Enjoy tasting flights and wine by the glass – and of course a wine glass full of popcorn! Reservations are encouraged. Hawthorne is open seasonally, so check ahead of time if you’re thinking about a visit in spring or fall.

Try: Barrel Reserve Chardonnay. According to our server, this is the wine that “put Hawthorne on the map.”

Location: 1000 Camino Maria. Keep in mind that Hawthorne closes during the winter.

Peninsula Cellars: Sipping in a Schoolhouse!

Peninsula Cellars is family-run winery housed in a quaint 19th-century schoolhouse. The Maple Grove Schoolhouse operated from 1896 to 1958. This historic building still has its original windows and floors. And be sure to check out the original slate chalk board and school bell!

Peninsula Cellars Winery

Peninsula Cellars produces some of the peninsula’s best dry whites, including their signature Riesling and Gewürztraminer. They also produce small-batch reds, some blended wines, and a couple of hard ciders.

The Kroupa family runs Peninsula Cellars and has over a century of farming experience in the area. They collaborate closely with local growers to source their high-quality grapes, all grown here on Old Mission Peninsula. The winery’s production facilities are located nearby.

Enjoy a glass of wine, pint of cider, or a tasting flight. Indoor and outdoor seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Groups of 12 or more are asked to make a reservation by calling 231-933-9787. Peninsula Cellars only accepts cashless payments.

Bonobo Winery: Wine & Good Times, Plus Support A Good Cause!

Bonobo Winery was founded by brothers and Traverse City natives, Todd and Carter Oosterhouse (yes, that Carter Oosterhouse from HGTV!) They offer a diverse selection of wines that showcase the best of what northern Michigan has to offer.

Bonobo features estate-grown wines including Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. The winery is also beginning to create more sparkling wines, like their impressive Blanc de Blancs.

The tasting room at Bonobo winery in Traverse City.
The tasting room bar at Bonobo

Their spacious outdoor deck has an amazing view of West Grand Traverse Bay. It’s the perfect spot for celebrating those stunning Old Mission Peninsula sunsets in the summer. When it’s colder outside, it’s great to get cozy by the tasting room’s indoor fireplace.

Bonobo has a small-plate menu, which includes house-made hummus, spiced marcona almonds, crab cakes, pork belly bites, barbacoa tacos, and fried goat cheese. My perfect pairing? Their incredible smoked whitefish dip and a glass of sparkling Brut Cuvée.

What sets Bonobo apart isn’t just the wine or the view—it’s the mission behind the name. The winery is named after the endangered bonobo, a relative of the chimpanzee found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A portion of proceeds supports The Bonobo Conservancy, an organization dedicated to protecting these magnificent animals and the tropical rainforest where they live.

Raising a glass at Bonobo means you’re not just enjoying exceptional wine – you’re supporting conservation efforts for one of our closest relatives in the animal kingdom!

If you’re looking to take your visit to the next level, the winery offers several VIP options. Enjoy a food and wine pairing with three small plates and three curated wines, a guided vineyard and winery tour, or a private tasting session led by an expert. However you choose to experience Bonobo, it’s a must-do stop on your Old Misison Peninsula wine tour!

Enjoy private tastings and wines by the glass. Bonobo does not offer a tasting flight but will offer you a small splash of one or two of their wines before you purchase a full glass.

Try:  Sparkling Rosé, a fruity blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. It’s my favorite sparkling wine on Old Mission Peninsula!

Chateau Grand Traverse: Riesling Royalty!

Riesling lovers, Chateau Grand Traverse is the stop for you! The first winery to begin operating on Old Mission, Chateau Grand Traverse is known for its fine wines and especially for its world-class Rieslings.

Sign up for their wildly popular “Art of Riesling Tour and Tasting” to see how these exceptional wines are created. The 60-minute tour begins in the vineyards for a close-up look at the Riesling grapevines that thrive here. From there, you’ll head into the cellar to follow the winemaking process from harvest to bottle. Then comes the best part: a guided tasting of several estate-grown Rieslings. Tours take place on Saturday afternoons and cost $40 per person.

You can also make reservations for a cellar tour and tasting to check out Chateau Grand Traverse’s array of 100 gleaming stainless-steel tanks and over 500 oak barrels. Private tasting in the tasting room and private barrel room tastings are also available.

Chateau Chantal offers a small plate menu ideal for pairing with their wines on the lounge or patio. Try their fig spread flatbread pizza, charcuterie board or a yummy chocolate red wine cookie. You can’t go wrong by ordering the German soft pretzel, served with a homemade Pinot Grigio cheese sauce and wine mustard.

You can even extend your visit and spend the night right on the property. The Inn at Chateau Grand Traverse has 6 contemporary guest rooms with private balconies and beautiful northern Michigan views. The adult-only stays include a complimentary tasting, a bottle of wine on your first night, and daily wine by the glass.

In the morning, enjoy self-serve breakfast offerings in a bistro-style breakfast room.

Try: One of their 10 varieties of Riesling, of course! It’s what Chateau Grand Traverse is famous for. Or if you’re a red fan like me, try the Gamay Noir Reserve. It was definitely my favorite from my tasting flight!

Brys Estate Vineyard And Winery: Lavender Fields & Frosé

Family -run Brys Estate Vineyard and Winery is popular with the locals for its lovely views and estate-grown, small-batch wines. There’s another reason to visit—especially in mid-July. Their Secret Garden is in full bloom, featuring over 6,000 fragrant lavender plants! Soak in the scent as you wander down the rows of plants, then head to the pick-your-own flower to gather a bouquet out of the field.

In the warmer months, relax in comfy Adirondack chairs at the lawn bar or unwind on the upper deck while taking in stunning views of the vineyard and East Grand Traverse Bay. Enjoy a friendly game of cornhole with friends while tasting some of your favorites, including Pinot Noir, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Blanc.

Brys produces apples as well as grapes. For something different, try a unique hard cider. Their lavender-infused cider is a big hit, although I prefer the semi-sweet Rosé cider.

You can also order shareable small plates to accompany your wine tasting. The Black Olive Tapenade with Fig & Mint with crostini is truly delicious! You can also choose from cheese and charcuterie boards, a couple of salads, and sandwiches.

Afterward, pop into the charming gift shop stocked with handcrafted lavender products—from soothing soaps and lotions to aromatic candles.

Don’t leave without sampling some of the lavender-inspired treats, like fresh-baked cookies and refreshing lavender lemonade. Or splurge on the ultimate northern Michigan indulgence: Moomers’ lavender ice cream! Stock up on picnic supplies and then find the perfect spot to spread out a blanket and relax.

Lavendar products can be purchased in the gift shop at Brys Estate Vineyard on Old Mission Peninsula.

Brys also offers on-site lodging. A quaint two-bedroom guesthouse, once a working barn, now provides cozy accommodations for an overnight vineyard retreat.

Enjoy flights and wine by the glass, as well as small plates and charcuteries boards. And of course, all things lavender!

Try: Brys Estate’s Frosé. It’s my hands-down favorite winery choice on a hot summer’s day. Frosé is a refreshing, slushy blend of Pinot Noir and Riesling. It’s even better when you add on a “topper” – choose from Cab/Merlot, Riesling/Gris, or Brys bubbly. It is Brys’ bestseller for a reason!

Bowers Harbor Vineyards offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, rustic charm, and exceptional wines. Once a working horse farm, the vineyard now spans 20 acres of wine-producing grapevines, with a former stable transformed into a cozy, welcoming tasting room.

Bowers Harbor produces a wide range of wines, including Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. There’s a couple of hard ciders on the menu, too.

There are plenty of outdoor spaces for guests to relax with a glass of wine. Settle into Adirondack chairs to soak in the scenery or opt for a table beneath the trees.

Enjoying the view at Bowers Harbor Vineyards on Old Mission Peninsula.

Bowers Harbor is proud of its reputation for being a family-friendly location. They have sparkling juices available for kids to enjoy. There’s plenty of space for little ones to run around, and even an interpretive nature trail for them to explore. Friendly dogs are welcome, too!

If you happen to be exploring the Old Mission wineries during the colder months, Bowers Harbor Vineyards is the ideal winter retreat. Kids can bring their sleds and enjoy the snow while adults unwind with a glass of wine or warm up with a spirited hot chocolate around the fire pit or in the heated pavilion.

Enjoy a tasting flight or wines by the glass, and small snacks, dips, and locally made cheeses.

Try: Pinot Secco. This bubbly Pinot Grigio is like summer in a glass! It has delightful hints of pineapple and citrus.

Location: 2896 Bowers Harbor Road. Reservations are not required, although they are strongly encouraged Friday – Sunday.

Tabone Vineyards: Fruit-Forward Wines in an Intimate Setting

Looking for a more intimate experience? Tabone Vineyards might just be your hidden gem. Founded in 2014, Tabone vineyard is the newest winery on Old Mission Peninsula. As a result, Tabone is often not as busy as some of the more established wineries – making it a delightful destination for wine lovers who want to get off of the beaten path.

The tasting room bar at Tabone Vineyards

This boutique, family-owned vineyard specializes in the classics of Old Mission: Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. It’s perfect for those who love white wines with fresh, fruity flavors.

Tabone’s has a laid-back, family-friendly feel. They offer patio seating complete with yard games. There’s plenty of space for visiting dogs to enjoy the shade and a little love from the employees!

The tasting room has a cozy ambiance, with large windows that let in the natural light. Attentive and gracious, our server patiently guiding us through the flight list and thoughtfully answered all of our questions.

The outdoor patio was a highlight of our visit. On a day that was too cool for the beach, we found the perfect alternative—sipping wine around warmth of patio heaters and enjoying views of the surrounding vines. During the winter months, you can relax in a heated igloo and warm up with mulled wine.

Enjoy tasting flights, wines by the glass and nonalcoholic beverages for family members under the age of 21. Their high season cheese and charcuterie plates are not available during the winter.

Try:  For something unique, ask for a taste of Rosé of Pinot Meunier: a pink-hued variation of Pinot Noir. We haven’t seen this at other Old Mission wineries. Tabone’s Estate Barrel Chardonnay is also hugely popular.

Chateau Chantal: Wine With A View!

Chateau Chantal vineyards on Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City

Chateau Chantal is more than just a winery—it’s a destination! This elegant French-style chateau doubles as a luxurious bed & breakfast and is one of the crown jewels along the Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail. Chateau Chantal offers an incredible experience in addition to incredible wines.

Chateau Chantal boasts panoramic views of the surrounding countryside from two separate outdoor patios: one overlooking the vineyards and East Grand Traverse Bay, and their dog-friendly patio overlooking West Grand Traverse Bay. (Trust me—wine always tastes better with a view of the bay!)

One thing I love about Chateau Chantal – it’s one of the few wineries in the Traverse City region with malbec on the menu! Their vineyard in Argentina grows and presses the grapes, then ships the juice to Old Mission, where it’s aged into a rich, full-bodied red wine.

Enjoy wine flights at Chateau Chantal!

Your designated driver can enjoy Chateau Chantal’s nonalcoholic Bubbly, a semi-dry white that is just as refreshing as the real thing! And if anyone in your group wants to mix it up, they can order a German Pilsner crafted by Traverse City’s Silver Spruce Brewing Company.

What sets Chateau Chantal apart is its wide range of experiences. They are known throughout the area for multi-course wine pairing dinners, hands-on cooking classes, and seasonal tapas tours. Groups can reserve their own private tasting room and can arrange private cellar tours for an up-close look at their winemaking process.

Have a flexible schedule? Plan your wine tour at the beginning of the week in order to skip the crowds, and reserve a spot at Chateau Chantal’s tapas tours, held Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays from 12:00 – 1:15 pm during the summer. Enjoy six courses of their fine wines paired with small bites. Examples from the menu include Whitefish Crostini paired with Late Harvest Riesling, and Asparagus Frittata paired with Pinot Grigio.

2 Lads Winery: Modern Vibes & Stunning Skyline

2 Lads Winery, at the tip of Old Mission Peninsula, has a modern feel.

Located the farthest distance out on Old Mission Peninsula, 2 Lads Winery specializes in cool-climate red wines, sparkling wines, and small-run white wines. Their Reserve Merlot is one of my favorite red wines that Old Mission has to offer.

The tasting room is in a sleek, contemporary building high on a hill that feels modern and unique compared to the other wineries along the Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail. It has huge floor to ceiling windows perfect for taking in spectacular views of the surrounding vineyards and East Grand Traverse Bay.

In warmer weather, relax outside in Adirondak chairs and take in the amazing panorama while enjoying a glass of wine.

You can book a guided tour and tasting to learn more about the special wine making process at 2 Lads. The facility is multi-level: fruit is processed upstairs and then flows down via gravity through stainless steel piping into tanks below. This minimizes agitation and contact with air, helping the wines develop their distinct flavor.

The $75 per person tour includes a selection of 2 Lads wines presented by your guide accompanied by house-prepared charcuterie. Group size is limited to six.

Tasting Flight at 2 Lads Winery on the Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail.

Many visitors begin their Old Mission Peninsula tour at 2 Lads and make their way back down the peninsula. Others save it for a grand finale! Either way, the winery’s unique architecture and outstanding wines make it well worth the scenic drive!

Enjoy wine flights, wine by the glass and a variety of charcuterie. Reservations required for wine tours and an in-depth, curated wine tasting for up to groups of six.

Mission Point Lighthouse: A Must-See Stop on Your Old Mission Wine Trail Tour

Making a stop at the Mission Point Lighthouse is a great way to finish your wine tasting experience along the Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail.

After making the scenic drive all of the way to 2 Lads, don’t miss the chance to continue on just a bit farther to the historic Mission Point Lighthouse —an ideal way to top off your Old Mission Peninsula wine trail adventure.

The lighthouse is located at the tip of the peninsula right on the 45th parallel —exactly halfway between the Equator and the North Pole. Don’t miss your photo op at the parallel marker! The Lighthouse is surrounded on three sides by wooded parkland, and the fourth side provides direct access to the beach.

The lighthouse beacon here started safeguarding ships in 1870. It’s now open for self-guided tours May through November, Wednesday-Monday from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. It’s a great opportunity to take a peek back in time and see how the early settlers lived in this area. You can pay a small fee to climb up into the lookout tower and enjoy the view.

The beach and trails are open year-round from 9:00 am – 10:00 pm, so you can explore the area and take photos of the lighthouse even if the lighthouse itself is closed. Take a walk on the trails in the surrounding woods, bring a picnic and a blanket to enjoy on the warm sand of the beach, or go for a refreshing swim.

Best Places to Eat Along The Wine Trail

Jolly Pumpkin: Pints & Pizza

If you’re looking for a place to enjoy a casual lunch or dinner along the way, Jolly Pumpkin is the place to go. Beloved by the locals, Jolly Pumpkin is famous for its wood-fired pizzas and truffle fries. Their pulled-pork nachos are one of their most popular appetizers. The last time we visited, grilled lamb chops were on the menu – not something we commonly see here in Traverse City!

Jolly Pumpkin offer a nice selection of local wines. However, if someone in your group is ready for a wine break, Jolly Pumpkin has a full bar and specially crafted cocktails. My personal favorite is a refreshing cherry mule: in recognition of Traverse City’s heritage being the Cherry Capital of the World!!

Jolly Pumpkin is especially known for their craft beer, particularly their sour ales brewed on-site. Check out the ceramic mugs hanging above the bar. It’s a tradition for long-term regulars to join the Mug Club. They know their personal mug is always waiting for them along with a seat at the bar. Jolly Pumpkin truly is the kind of local place where everyone knows your name!

The Boathouse Restaurant: Fine Dining and a View of the Bay

If you’re more in the mood for fine dining, The Boathouse Restaurant is the place for you. The Boathouse is the one true waterfront gem on Old Mission Peninsula. With over 300 feet of shoreline on Bowers Harbor, it’s the only place on the peninsula where you can enjoy your dinner right by the water. You’ll have great views of the bay whether you’re seated inside near the windows or outdoors on their bayside deck.

The Boathouse menu leans heavily on local ingredients, highlighting fresh produce, herbs, and seasonal fruit. Classy touches are added to create dishes from rich morel mushroom bisque and crispy tempura asparagus to an ultra-tender Wagyu filet or buttery lobster tails.

Buchan’s Blueberry Hill

Ready for a sweet break from wine tasting? One of my favorite little stops along the Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail is Buchan’s Blueberry Hill. This charming, family-run farm stand is known for their incredibly sweet blueberries and homemade bakery treats. Nothing beats sipping blueberry lemonade on a warm summer day!

Take a break from wine tasting and stop in at Buchan's Blueberry Hill for homemade ice cream and bakery products

Located just off Center Road, Buchan’s is a favorite among both locals and visitors. Who can resist some blueberry pie still warm from the oven? And they’re known for creating the most scrumptious blueberry muffins around.

Best of all, Buchan’s makes amazing ice cream using fruit right from their farm. Fresh blueberry, peach, cherry and apple flavors are all wildly popular. My personal favorite is lemon ice cream with swirls of whole blueberries mixed in! It’s truly the best ice cream I’ve found on Old Mission Peninsula.

Schedule your winery tour for the end of July or early August and stop in at Buchan’s to pick your own blueberries straight off of the vine. We make this an annual trip, aiming for 10 pounds of blueberries that end up in our freezer to keep us in fruit smoothies all winter long.

FAQ

When is the best time to visit the Old Mission Peninsula Wineries?

We enjoy visiting the wineries any time of year! Each season has its own unique experiences.

In general, the wineries are always busier on the weekends. It’s not unusual to encounter a bridal party or girls’ weekend getaway group on Fridays and Saturdays, especially in spring and summer. Winery tour buses are also more active towards the end of the week, which can be a lot of fun if you are up for group energy. Head out Monday through Wednesday if you’re interested in a more intimate experience.

Spring: There are many advantages to a wine trail adventure during the spring. Spring is the ideal time to go if you’re interested in peaceful tastings with fewer crowds. Temperatures are often pleasant, and many days are warm enough to venture out on winery decks and patios. If you time it right in late April or early May, you might experience Old Mission Peninsula in full bloom- take in the cherry and apple blossoms that Northern Michigan is famous for.

A huge plus: prices for accommodations will definitely be lower!

Summer: Summer is the most popular time to journey along the Wine Tasting Trail. The vineyards are lush and green, the days are long and sunny, and the views of Grand Traverse Bay are unbeatable. Many wineries host live music, food trucks, and special events. It’s a festive time of year with a lot of energy.

The wineries can be crowded, especially on weekends. Make tasting reservations in advance.

Fall: Fall brings a breathtaking display of colors and harvest festivities. This might be the best time to visit for hard-core wine lovers. The fall harvest is in full swing, and winemakers are busy bringing in the grapes.

The trees along the peninsula are ablaze with red, yellow and gold. It’s also when limited-release wines and harvest festivals take place.

The Old Mission Peninsula is a popular route for fall color tours, so book lodging and tasting early.

Winter: We love heading to the wineries in winter, when Old Mission Peninsula is transformed into a winter wonderland. It’s a much quieter time of year: perfect for a romantic getaway!

Many of the wineries have outdoor fire pits and warming huts, plus cozy indoor spaces near crackling fireplaces.

Several of the wineries offer snowshoeing right on their property. There are even special weekends where you can snowshoe through the vineyards from one winery to the next.

Plan your visit for late January or February if you are an ice wine fan!

Many of the wineries along the Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail take part in a Winter Wine Pass promotion. The event runs from December 1 through March 31. Passholders receive one complimentary wine flight or full glass of wine per winery. (offer varies by location) There can be additional specials at some wineries, such as discounted pours, savings on bottles of wine, food pairings, and merchandise deals.

The participating wineries are Black Star Farms (Old Mission), Mari Vineyards, Peninsula Cellars, Chateau Grand Traverse, Brys Estate, Bowers Harbor Vineyards, Chateau Chantal, and 2 Lads.

Only Hawthorne Vineyards fully closes in winter. All of the other Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail wineries remain open seasonally but with reduced hours, so be sure to check hours ahead of time.

It's possible to snowshoe between wineries a couple of times per year.

What is ice wine?

The Old Mission Peninsula is one few places in the United States where nature cooperates to create a truly special winter treat: ice wine!

This rich, golden-hued dessert wine is made from grapes that have been left on the vine until they freeze in temperatures at around 15 degrees Fahrenheit. The grapes are then harvested and whisked to the press while still frozen, resulting in a concentrated wine with a higher sugar content.

Chateau Chantal, Chateau Grand Traverse and Brys Estate are all known for their Riesling-based ice wines. Chateau Chantal hosts an annual Ice Wine Festival in January, allowing guests to get a behind-the-scenes look at how this special wine is crafted.

Michigan ice wine just might be the best part of winter – be sure to have a glass for dessert!

Can you bring dogs to the wineries?

Many of the wineries on the Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail are dog-friendly, especially in their outdoor areas like patios and picnic spots. Most are totally fine with well-behaved pups on a leash. Of course, owners are expected to pick up after their pets.

Bowers Harbor Vineyard is perhaps the most dog-friendly of the wineries, and they encourage patrons to bring their furry friends. They sell dog treats, stuffies, and wine dog bandanas.

In fact, the owners have their own dogs that love to greet guests and are allowed to roam freely through the vineyards. The staff even names a wine after each of the winery’s dogs, based on the dog’s personality. Winston’s Wine, a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot, was named after their 12-year-old English cream Labrador. A portion of the proceeds is donated to the local humane society.

Mari offers a dog-friendly patio with water bowls and treats for dogs. The websites for Brys, Chateua Chantal, Tabone, Chateau Grand Traverse and 2 Lads all note that they have designated outdoor areas where dogs are welcome. However, they don’t mention perks like treats or water bowls, so bringing these items from home is a good idea.

Policies vary by winery, though, so it’s a good idea to check each one’s website or call ahead before visiting.

The Mission Point Lighthouse Park also welcomes dogs on a leash.

Which Peninsula is better for a Traverse City Wine Tour?

Of course, there isn’t really a “right” answer to this question! Take our interactive Traverse City winery quiz to help you decide!

The Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail is popular with those who want to make several stops in one day, as the wineries are located pretty close together. This trail cuts down on driving time for your designated driver and is the more popular destination for organized wine tours.

We head to Old Mission when we have guests who specifically say they are interested in a wine tour. We can easily do a tasting at three to four wineries while maximizing our time spent at each one.

The Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail covers a much larger area, and the wineries are more spread out. It doesn’t quite have the same “wine trail” feel as the Old Mission Peninsula, as there are multiple routes that you can take.

There are fewer tour busses on the Leelanau Peninsula, so it might be your destination of choice if you are looking to avoid peak season crowds.

We head to the Leelanau Peninsula when we have guests who want to explore more than just wineries. The wineries here are spread across charming towns like Suttons Bay, Leland and Northport. There are also a lot more available options if you plan to include lunch or dinner. On this itinerary, we might visit just one or two wineries while taking time to explore the villages.

And when we are guest-free? We have favorite spots on both peninsulas, so we check winery websites to find special events, dinners, or live music that appeal to us.

The Wrap-up

No matter the season, a visit to the Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail offers more than just world-class wine—it’s an invitation to slow down, take in breathtaking views, and savor the best of northern Michigan. Each winery has its own character, from rustic charm to modern elegance, but all share a deep passion for crafting exceptional wine in a truly unforgettable setting.

After decades of enjoying this area myself, I can tell you: whether you’re here for a weekend getaway or showing off Traverse City to out-of-town guests, the Wine Trail never disappoints. So grab your favorite people, plan your stops, and make time to linger over a glass (or two).

Cheers to scenic drives, northern Michigan wines, and memories made among the vines!
